abstract = {Purpose – This paper aims to develop overbooking models to determine the optimal number of overbooking for hotels having one and two different types of rooms.; Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents mathematical modeling to find the optimal solutions of overbooking for stochastic cancellation.; Findings – The authors prove that for hotels with only one type of room, there exists a closed form solution to guarantee the optimal number of overbooking, depending on the cost of walking customers to other hotels, the cost of unsold rooms and cancellation distribution observed in the past. For hotels with two types of room, they prove the convexity structure and identify equations to seek the number of overbooking for low-price and high-price rooms. The authors also provide key comparative statics on how model parameters impact the optimal decisions under different scenarios.; Practical implications – Overbooking decision is one of important and complicated decision-makings, which is related directly to the yield of hotel revenue management. It is necessary for a hotel manager to observe cancellation pattern in the history to make a reliable decision. This paper presents a method that can help hotel manager make this decision in practice.; Originality/value – This paper is one of the first articles in the hotel industry that considers the marginal cost for each room unsold caused by no shows and the marginal cost for each walking guest in a comprehensive perspective. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.},

abstract = {Revenue Management (RM) helped increase profitability for many travel industries. Selling perishable products with a fixed event date, the Sports and Entertainment (S&E) ticket industry can potentially benefit from RM ideas but has received less attention in the literature. In this study we develop dynamic pricing models for stochastic S&E demand in a discrete finite time setting, where demand depends not only on ticket prices but also on remaining times until the show dates. We assume the show popularity is uncertain to the seller, but this information can be learned via Bayesian updates as early sales are revealed. We present stochastic dynamic programs for Sports and Entertainment tickets pricing decisions. We test the models using real data obtained from a major performance venue in the U.S. to understand properties of the model solutions and performance under different scenarios. Our results show that demand learning is most beneficial when the initial estimates are incorrect. In addition, we found it is less necessary for the seller to vary price every period if demand variation is low and/or a large amount of demand arrives close to the show dates. Overall, we found that the benefits from having flexibility of price changes and demand learning can complement each other to achieve as much as 8.15% revenue increase on average, as compared to static pricing. © 2014 Phumchusri and Swann.},

abstract = {This research applies Six Sigma approach in order to reduce defect by increasing the assembly process capability index (Cpk) of Integrated Circuit (IC) production process. This study applies five phases (DMAIC) of Six Sigma approach beginning with define (D), measure (M), analyze (A), improve (I) and control (C) phases, respectively. The response of the research identified in the define phase is the chipped width with Cpk of 0.66 determined from the measure phase. The half-factorial experiments are implemented in the analyze phase to find the significant factors which are water temperature, water pressure and feed rate. In improve phase, the additioanl expriments are performed according to the Box-Behnken design in order to determine the non-linear relation between the chipped width and all mentioned factors. The optimal setting of each factors are determined by applied the response surface optimizer. Under the optimal setting, the control charts are used in the control phase to monitor the chipped width. The resulted Cpk of the response is increased to 1.39 which is greater than the one-sided accpetable process capability of 1.25. © (2014) Trans Tech Publicutions, Switzerland.},

abstract = {This research presents a Pareto biogeography-based optimisation (BBO) approach to mixed-model sequencing problems on a two-sided assembly line where a learning effect is also taken into consideration. Three objectives which typically conflict with each other are optimised simultaneously comprising minimising the variance of production rate, minimising the total utility work and minimising the total sequence-dependent setup time. In order to enhance the exploration and exploitation capabilities of the algorithm, an adaptive mechanism is embedded into the structure of the original BBO, called the adaptive BBO algorithm (A-BBO). A-BBO monitors a progressive convergence metric in every certain generation and then based on this data it will decide whether to adjust its adaptive parameters to be used in the next certain generations or not. The results demonstrate that A-BBO outperforms all comparative algorithms in terms of solution quality with indifferent solution diversification. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.},

abstract = {We study an application of the can-order policy in one-warehouse n-retailer inventory systems, and propose a heuristic approach for setting the appropriate inventory policy. On the can-order policy, an order is triggered when a retailer’s inventory position reaches its must-order level. Then other retailers are examined whether their inventory reaches their can-order level, and if so they are filled by this order as well. Warehouse fulfills all involved retailers’ inventory to their order-up-to levels. The can-order policy is not only able to save the total system-wide cost from joint replenishment, but it is also simple to use. Computer simulation is utilized to preliminarily study and to determine the best-known solution. We propose a heuristic approach utilizing the decomposition technique, iterative procedure, and golden section search to obtain the satisfying total system-wide cost. This can save our computational time to find the appropriate inventory policy setting from the reduced search space. We found that the proposed heuristic approach performs very well with the average cost gap of less than 2% comparing to the best-known solution. abstract = {This paper studies the problem of 'Scaling the House', or how venue managers should optimally divide seats into sections with different prices. From previous study, it was found that distance from the stage and distance from the seating row's centre affect demand. We develop a two-dimensional zoning model for the optimal 'Scaling the House' decisions. When demand is not significantly sensitive to distance from the centre, we present an alternative one-dimensional zoning model and show that the optimal seating row (to be priced at a higher price before switching to the next lower price) is the row whose expected revenue when charging at a high price is equal to the expected revenue when charging at a low price. We provide key comparative statics on how model parameters impact the optimal decisions and discuss the important managerial insights on when it is most worthwhile to section seats into two dimensional zones. abstract = {In recent years, revenue management (RM) have played an important role in driving more profitability for industries selling perishable products with fixed amount of resources and different customers are willing to pay a different price for each of them. While dynamic price has been widely used in airline and hotel industry, a smaller number of researches explore the existence of dynamic pricing behaviors in non-travel industry. This paper investigates effects of relevant factors such as timing and realized demand on the performance ticket prices. While previous empirical studies related to performance ticket prices rely on the aggregate data and have not focused on exploring how the price changes during the selling season, this study uses detailed transaction sales obtained from 117 classical concert tickets, enabling the study of dynamic pricing structures. Three different models are compared: Ordinary Least Square, Random Effect and Fixed Effect models. The results indicate that Fixed Effect is the most appropriate model as compared to others. We found that day of shows, i.e., Saturday shows are significantly priced higher than others. The tickets of shows during the end of the season (during February to April) have lower prices compared to the beginning. We found timing in the selling period has significant impact on ticket prices. In particular, ticket price is lower when it is closer to the show date and a large amount of discount occurs right before the show starts. © 2013 IEEE.},

abstract = {In order to realize the intelligent maintenance management system, this paper presents a development of computerized preventive maintenance management system (CPMMS) to manage and record the maintenance information in the database for the CNC machines. The failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) has been utilized to deal with the computerized preventive maintenance management system in this research. The FMEA is analyzed to determine the risk priority number (RPN) of the CNC machines in order to set the preventive maintenance plan as a standard maintenance. The developed program can generate the next schedule of the preventive maintenance plan automatically, which increases the efficiency and decreases the breakdown. It has been proved that the proposed and developed CPMMS with FMEA program can improve the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). The RPN has been reduced due to a decrease in the severity and the occurrence. © 2014 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.},
